I bought a notebook and I’m not afraid to use it

Continuing with my Natalie Goldberg virtual love affair, I bought a new, cheap notebook today. It looks a little like the one in the photo above, although my pen is definitely less fancy.

Wow, you say, thanks for the update.

But listen, there’s a point. Well, the wonderful Natalie Goldberg makes a point. Like many of the points made in Writing Down The Bones, it’s both simple and challenging at the same time. She suggests filling a notebook every month.

I like the idea of a notebook because, let’s face it, flipping open the Air’s lid is not always convenient when thoughts come, however quickly it might boot into your Scrivener.

A secret: I have notebooks littered around the house and in the attic like a daily drinker’s hidden bottles. Most of those notebooks are half full at best. I have been a notebook dipper. I have been a notebook snob. Or, at least, I have used snobbery of sorts as an excuse to give up writing in a particular notebook until I find something more suitable.

I have, in short, been a right tool when it comes to writing tools.

No more. I have made the commitment to write in this new notebook daily and to fill it up by December 23rd. (Just in time to treat myself to a new one for Christmas.) Again, this sounds simple but, given my past experience, possibly challenging.

On the other hand, I’m looking forward to using a pen on paper again. Although my handwriting now resembles the random wanderings of drunken ants across the page, I’m sure it may get better with practice. And practice is what this is all about.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the note taking and writing feeds into my other writing, too.

Onwards.
